Every year in April, after the first series of warm days the local newspaper goes out into downtown Camden, Maine looking to interview the locals. The question is always the same ”What sign tells you that winter is over?” Some will say that is the buds on the trees. Some on will say that Ice Cream looks good again. Others say that is crocuses blooming. But if they asked me, I would say that it was sanding dust.
Every year, myself and the crew go through the age old ritual of sanding the boat. Almost all of the sixty foot Schooner Olad is hand sanded. It is the ritual that separates the mice from the men, because the work is so time consuming. However, it is that care that makes Olad such a handsome vessel. It won’t be long before her varnish glistens in the sun as the schooner cuts a wake in Penobscot Bay.
Every year, while my finger tips go numb from sanding, I don’t seem to mind. It is because I know when the maintenance is all done I will get to sail my favorite boat, to my favorite places in Maine. It is the state of my birth and I continue to live in her good graces.
As always the season has some great Special Events lined up. I already have a great list of custom sailing charters to look forward too. We have already booked two weddings, two wedding parties, and one renewal of vows with some good friends. Not to mention that we have four Lobster Bakes planned out on Warren Island, and as always wait for the first lobsters of the year.
We will be in the water soon, we will keep you posted. See you soon.
